To keep data transfer from occurring...

Go to:
Start > Settings > Connections (tab) > Connections > Advanced (tab) > Select Networks

Click New on the top set of buttons (Internet connection).

In General, just name it what you want (ie: no connect). In Modem, click New, add made up stuff and numbers... just go through the steps with info that will not work.

When done, go back to the Advanced tab you were on earlier, Select Networks and make sure that your new connection is selected, not Media Net.

Test it all by opening Internet Explorer. If it fails to connect, it worked.

To get Media Net back:
Start > Settings > Connections (tab) > Connections > Advanced (tab) > Select Networks and select Media Net.

MMS will still work when you kill Media Net from being the connection to the Internet. This just keeps programs like games and gps from accessing the internet without you knowing.

Thank you to ClearD for the information.

I have a question though, when I click MSN, it automatically started 3G instead of WIFI. Any fix on that ?
Thanks in advance.

MSN and all the built-in IM's use a tiny bit of data that AT&T doesn't charge you for. They use texts instead of data to IM, so I guess they weren't worried about the tiny bit of logon and logoff data. In short, it's free.

Just out of curiousity, how is this any better than just setting the device up to use wifi or the "work network."  Wifi is free, so even if you never plan on using it, there really isn't a reason not to set it up so thats how the device tries to connect.

Am I missing something?

Do the random numbers do something different?

I was never able to set mine to wifi only and have it actually work.  Programs would still use the MediaNet settings to access the internet, namely the aGPS crap and programs that think I want them to update. This was just the only sure fire way to keep from getting billed for little chunks of data all day long like I had been.

BUT, if you know of another way that works, please post it. I like options.

Okay, I think this helps answer another question I had.  When I bought the phone, I had AT&T take off Navigator and cancel the media package (and block any internet access, I think).  One of the main reasons I bought the phone was because it had WiFi.  When I cancelled it, they told me that I'd no longer be able to send or receive pictures through text.  I didn't really understand that (still don't).

So, now that I have cancelled the media package through AT&T, can I still use this workaround and be able to send pictures?

You need to access MediaNET to send MMS (picture messages). The workaround posted here will simply not allow things like aGPS or web browsers to access the internet using the GPRS data on the phone. It will still allow MediaNET for picture messages. However, if you have AT&T block ALL data, you can't send or receive picture messages (free or not) because it needs MediaNET to do so. Make sense? =]

Kinda sorta.  Smiley

So I need to call AT&T and have them unblock data, then try the workaround?  (I'm not all that tech-savvy - can you tell?)

That's correct, because you can't send picture messages or use IM without SOME data being transferred. But connecting to IM (even though it uses data) is free, and if you have a texting plan that includes MMS, connecting while sending picture messages is free also.

Make sure you have some type of Text Messaging Plan.

They cost you money per send and per receive as does MMS and IM.

If you have a plan then you are covered. 500 = 500 , Unlimited = Unlimited
The free vs not free is in reference to the way the data is exchanged and if any extra costs will be incurred for users with some sort of text messaging plan.

This is more for people just browsing and not the posters on this thread BTWWink
